Indians knock off Rattlers Saturday, 78-69 at home
The McCook Community College men's basketball team completed an undefeated week knocking off previously ranked Otero Junior College Saturday, 78-69 in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. Otero fell out of the rankings Monday after being ranked 18th the previous week."I think it's the most complete game we played all year," said MCC Coach Kyle Drennan. "The buy-in from these guys is finally there."
Saturday's win followed a win Tuesday over Southeast Community College 88-77 and Friday's win over Trinidad State 84-73.
Freshman LeTre Darthard (Denton, Texas) paced the Tribe with 22 points. Tyrik Singh (San Juan, Trinidad and Tobago, sophomore transfer from Daytona State) scored 18 points and had six rebounds.
A pair of freshmen scored 10 points each: Rahkiem Petterson (Midland, Texas) and Boaz Quinlan (Beavertown, Ore.). Sophomore transfers Raheim Sullivan (Toronto, Ontario/Moberly Area CC) and Justin Costello (Omaha /Elkhorn South High School/University of Nebraska) each added eight.
"Raheim goes 1 for 11 from the field we don't win pretty much any game this year if he did that, but he's playing at such an elite level as a true point-guard with his ball movement that everybody else just feeds off it," Drennan said. "Justin's three of seven with four rebounds, I mean you look down the stat sheet and everybody's doing something."
After not attempting a free throw in the first half, MCC responded making 10 of 12 in the second half (83.3 percent). The Indians shot 46.7 percent from the field and made 12 of 22 3-pointers (54.5 percent)
Otero shot 47.3 percent from the field, 45.8 percent from the 3-point line (11 of 24) and six of 11 from the line and held a slight rebounding edge 31-30
"I'm proud of them, they are getting confident, that's three in a row, and I know the guys want another shot at both Lamar and North Platte. Come Region IX tournament time, I don't think anybody is going to want to play us," said Drennan.
The Indians improve to 12-15 overall and 3-7 in south sub-region play and will take on Lamar Friday at 7 p.m. and finish the season Feb. 25 against North Platte in a men's only game.
