MCC Golf wins Lamar tournament by 23 shots

LAMAR, Colo. – McCook Community College golfers took four of the top six spots Friday to claim the two-day Lamar Community College tournament by 23 shots.

MCC shot a 2-under round Friday to finish at 7-under for the tournament and posted a two-day total of 553. Eastern Wyoming was second at 576 (18-over) and Lamar third at 592 (32-over).

"A huge win today under very cold and breezy conditions," said MCC Coach Tyler Loop. "They've done a great job this year in this kind of weather which means they are mentally tough players."

Individually MCC golfers brought home first, second, and third-place points as well as sixth.

Ethan Gough (sophomore, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa), claimed the individual tournament title with a 5-under 135 with back-to-back rounds of 68 and 67.

Freshman Cade Cryer (Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) was two shots back of Gough and placed second with a 3-under 137. He had rounds of 67 and 70.

Brayden Dahl (sophomore, Outer West Durban, South Africa) was tied for third place with a two-day 139 (1-under par.) He had rounds of 69 and 70.

Cayden Wynne (sophomore, Lincoln) placed sixth shooting back-to-back rounds of 1-over-par 71.

"Good job to Coach Nick Nothnagel, who was with them this week, having them focused on the golf and not the weather," Loop said.

After shooting a 72 Thursday, sophomore Jordan Bingham (South Jordan, Utah) had a round of 79 Friday to finish with an 11-over 151. Payton Craw (sophomore, McCook) came back from a 79 on Thursday with a 75 Friday to finish at 154.

Competing as an individual, sophomore Spencer Wishon (Oberlin, Kan.) had rounds of 75 and 80 to finish with a two-day 155.

Friday concluded the fall portion of the year-long Region IX standings race as MCC holds a three-point lead over Eastern Wyoming, 54-51. MCC received first place points in four of the six fall tournaments. The season will resume in Lamar on March 23, 2023.

"This was an important tournament because as now we head into the off season with the lead," Loop said. "Next week is the final tournament of the fall and is a non-region tournament, then some much needed time off."

MCC will travel to Gothenburg Thursday to host the Nebraska Junior College Classic. All four of Nebraska's junior college golf teams will be on hand; MCC will be joined by Southeast Community College, Central Community College, and Northeast Community College.
