Butler takes 1-0 lead in District Championship with 13-0 win

The Butler Community College softball team won its 22nd straight game Friday winning 13-0 over McCook Community College in the opening game of the NJCAA Division I Plains District best-of-three championship series.

The No. 6 ranked Grizzlies came out with three runs in the first inning with a leadoff triple, a walk, a stolen base, a two-run single, then added another on an MCC error to lead 3-0.

"We played tight today and didn't respond to early adversity," said MCC Coach Kevin Kaalberg.

After MCC went out in order, BCC added another run in the second with back-to-back one-out doubles to take a 4-0 lead.

MCC's best scoring chance came when sophomore Ashland Baca (sophomore, Byers, Colo.) led off the second inning with a single and freshman Tyler Mooring (Santa Clara, Utah) doubled her to third but MCC left both runners stranded.

Avery O'Neil (sophomore, Ellsworth, Wis.) pitched the first two innings for MCC and allowed four runs on four hits, two walks and one strikeout.

Anna Wilcox (sophomore, Victoria, British Columbia) came on in the third and allowed six earned runs over 2.1 innings as BCC scored four runs in the third and five in the fifth inning. Mooring pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, surrendering two hits.

MCC's third and final hit of the game came when Sydney Erlandson (freshman, Woodbury, Minn.) led off the fifth inning, but she was later doubled off first base on an out.

Butler outhit MCC 15-3 and MCC committed three errors.

The Grizzlies improve to 47-2 on the season and MCC goes to 42-20.

Game 2 of the series is set for noon Saturday with a second game to follow if MCC wins the first game.

"We need to come out with more energy tomorrow," Kaalberg said.

The winner of the series will advance to the NJCAA College World Series in Yuma, Ariz. May 24-28.
