MCC picks up 12th win with sweep over Southeast CC
The McCook Community College volleyball team picked up their 12th win of the year Tuesday and improved to 2-0 in conference play with a straight-set win over Southeast Community College in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.MCC won 25-13, 25-14, 25-17.
After taking the weekend off with no games, the Lady Indians came out sharp in the first set.
"I told the girls the overall defense we played in that first set was probably the best defense we've played all year," MCC Coach Hayley Kobza said. "Everybody was talking, we were covering each other and that's what we've been working for all along,"
Sophomore Mallory Brown, (Colorado Springs) had eight kills, two assist blocks, and seven digs. Freshman Fernanda Canedo, (Cochabamba, Boliva) had eight kills, nine digs and one ace serve.
The coach said she tweaked the lineup a little, not so much switching out any players -- just who they were positioned next to on the court and that seemed to provide a spark as well.
"I just felt this fit really worked, and gives us a stronger lineup," Kobza said, adding that she felt the weekend off came at a great time with seven weeks left in the season and an always challenging weekend trip to southern Colorado.
Sophomore Bailey Honn, (McCook) had five kills. Freshman Kallie Cathcart, (Holly, Colo.) had three assist blocks and one solo block. Freshman Mackenzie Anderson (Ogallala) had two assist blocks.
Sophomore Kiera Barr (Granby, Colo.) led the Lady Indians with 16 digs and added a pair of serving aces.

The Lady Indians hit the road Friday and Saturday for the southern Colorado trip to La Junta Friday against Otero Junior College (11-5) and Saturday at Trinidad State Junior College (3-15).
"Hopefully we can come out his weekend and play our best volleyball," Kobza, "We still have a few things to work on before Friday. We have some hitters and a setters who need connecting better and I think we still have some things we can work on to improve our offense."
