MCC Volleyball snaps three-game skid with win over Otero
The McCook Community College volleyball team snapped a three-game losing streak Friday downing Otero Junior College in straight sets 25-19, 25-17, 25-16.
"This was a completely different team than the one that lost in North Platte Tuesday," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.
"We didn't look scrambled and it looked like everybody knew what they were doing and where they were supposed to go."
Because of injuries to a couple freshmen, a pair of second-year players stepped it up Friday night according to the coach.
Last weekend, freshman Eisa Mondragon, a defensive specialist/libero from Topeka, Kan. was lost with a concussion and remains out of the lineup. On Tuesday MCC lost freshman middle Suzy Cordova (Fort Collins, Colo.) with a knee injury and is expected to be out another month.
Against the Rattlers Friday redshirt freshman Evie Hopkinson (Spanish Fork, Utah) again took over the libero role and led the Lady Indians with 20 digs to go along with one ace serve.
"Evie is crushing it. She is a gamer. She had 20 digs and is just getting more confident with every point," Kobza said.
With the injury Tuesday to Cordova, sophomore Emily Barr (Hershey) shifted back to that position Friday and led MCC with seven assist blocks.
"We moved her to the middle and she crushed it too. She just went in there and looked like she was supposed to be there and just got to work," Kobza said. "Emily wanted to see the court and knew this was her chance to step it up."
Barr had five kills, four digs and an ace to go along with those seven assist blocks.
Sophomores Fernanda Canedo (Cochabamba, Boliva) had 13 kills, one assist block, six digs and two aces. Kallie Cathcart (Holly, Colo.) had seven kills, 12 digs, two assist blocks and an ace. Freshman Jordan Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) had four kills, four assist blocks and eight digs. Amerika Jones (freshman, Honolulu, Hawaii) had two kills and three assist blocks.
Freshman Janie Sommer (Maxwell) had 21 assists and six digs. Heiata Tauota, sophomore, (Nantes, France) had eight assists and one kill.
Otero falls to 6-5 on the year (1-1 in Region IX South)
MCC goes to 8-6, (2-2 in Region IX South)
On Saturday the Lady Indians play Trinidad State at 1 p.m. at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center as part of a triangular with Southeast Community College. Trinidad and SECC will play the second game at approximately 3 p.m. and MCC will take on the Lady Storm in the final match, around 5 p.m.
