MCC loses to Butler and Iowa Western in tourney

The McCook Community College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Friday in the opening day of the 18-team MCC Invitational at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

MCC lost 3-1 to Butler Community College, a team that finished No. 4 in the nation last season and lost to Iowa Western Community College 3-0, a team that finished No. 1 last season and is the two-time defending national champion.

MCC goes to 5-5 on the season and take on Ranger College at noon Saturday followed at 6 p.m. against Garden City.

MATCH 1 – Butler CC 3, MCC 1: After the Grizzlies took the first set 25-21, MCC came back to take the second set 25-22 but the Kansas team won the final two sets 25-16, 25-15.

Victoria Thomas (sophomore, Houston, Texas) led the attack with 12 digs to go along with eight digs. Freshman Fernanda Merancio (Lamar, Colo.) added eight kills and one assist block

Freshman Gabby Caskey (Ogallala) was credited with eight kills and three assist blocks. Freshman Gracen Tuttle (Ogallala) had six assist blocks and three kills.

Alexis Pontine (freshman, Ignacio, Colo.) led the passing with 32 assists. She added three kills, three assist blocks and two aces.

MATCH 2 – Iowa Western CC 3, MCC 0: The Reivers took MCC 25-16, 25-18, 25-20.

Victoria Thomas led the way at the net with 10 kills. She added seven digs and one assist block. Fernanda Merancio had six kills.

Gracen Tuttle had three assist blocks and two digs. Gabby Caskey had four kills and one ace. Jisell Chumacero (sophomore, Eaton, Colo.) had three kills and one assist block. Makayla Brown (sophomore, Colorado Springs) had two assist blocks.

Alexis Pontine freshman, Ignacio, Colo.) had 21 assists and one ace.

McKenna Crews (sophomore, Loveland, Colo.) and Greta Bolognini (freshman, Bergamo Italy/ Parkview Christian, Lincoln, Neb.) both had seven digs.
