Two MCC baseball players ink with four-year programs

Two more former McCook Community College baseball players have signed on to continue their baseball careers at four-year schools.

MCC Baseball Coach Jon Olsen said Melwin Perez has signed-on at Friends University and Kade Poteet-Herrera at St. Andrews University.

"I'm really happy that these two guys found a home for next year," said Olsen. "It couldn't have happened to better young men, both are great students, workers, and young men, and I wish them both the best of luck."

Perez, a 5-6 sophomore outfielder from the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico, swung a hot bat during MCC's 2021 surge into the Region IX playoffs. He batted .326 in 2021 with three home runs and 15 RBIs in 18 games. This season he appeared in 21 games and batted .183 with five RBIs.

Friends University is an NAIA school in Wichita. The Falcons were 30-22 in 2022.

"Friends is getting a very good athlete, with a great arm and speed with pop at the plate as well," Olsen said.

Poteet-Herrera is a 6-4 first baseman who didn't play his first year at MCC then played in 28 games this past season and batted .268 with six doubles, one home run and 18 RBIs.

St. Andrews University is an NAIA program in Laurinburg, North, Carolina. The Knights went 37-17 last season

"St. Andrews is getting a good left-handed bat," Olsen said. "They are definitely on the right track as both of them excelled in the classroom at McCook."
