The McCook Community College softball team won its first ever Region IX title Sunday beating Northeastern Junior College 6-4. After winning all three games in the tournament, the team moves on to host the Plains District best-of-three championship series starting Friday against Butler Community College.

The McCook Community College softball team downed Trinidad State Saturday to take the winner’s bracket of the Region IX Tournament. MCC won 6-4 and will play the consolation bracket winner Northeastern Junior College for a championship battle Sunday starting at noon.

The McCook Community College softball team began the Region IX Tournament Friday at the Jaycee Sports Complex with a 5-1 win over Northeastern Junior College to advance to the winners-bracket game Saturday. MCC will take on Trinidad State at noon. This is a double-elimination tournament.

First-round matchups and game times have been announced for the Region IX Softball tournament to be held this weekend at the Jaycees Sports Complex. As the regular-season Region IX champion, MCC gained the top seed and will open play Friday at 4 p.m. against the winner of the first game of the day (11 a.m.) between fourth-seeded Northeastern Junior College (30-23, 17-17) and fifth-seeded Western Nebraska (24-28 overall and 17-13 in conference).

MCC claims the Region IX regular-season title and will host the Region IX tournament starting Thursday. Times and matchups for the double-elimination tournament will be announced Monday night.

With first-place in the standings on the line Friday the McCook Community College softball team split a pair of games with Western Nebraska. The Cougars took the first game 5-3 and MCC came back and won the second game 8-5 to remain in first place.
