MCC women pick up first win; defeat Lady Lancers 59-54

TORRINGTON, Wyo. – The McCook Community College women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season Saturday taking a 59-54 win over Eastern Wyoming.

"It's always good to get that first win," said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. "We have been struggling, and to come to Eastern Wyoming and get a win in a place we haven't won in a while feels great."

The teams were tied at 25-25 at the half. MCC outscored the Lady Lancers 14-9 in the third quarter and held the lead through the fourth quarter.

"Today we made some shots," Pritchett said. "It would have nice to knock down a few more free throws especially at the end of the game. But it's great to see the ball go through the basket today."

MCC shot 39.6 percent from the field, made eight of 24 shots from distance (33.3 percent) and was 15 of 22 from the line (59.1 percent).

Eastern Wyoming shot 32.7 percent from the floor, 23.5 percent from the 3-point line and made 14 of 22 foul shots (63.6 percent). The Lancers held a 25-23 rebounding edge.

Freshman Gemma Gruettner Bacoul (Berlin, Germany) led MCC in scoring with 13 points. Marta Moya Perez (freshman, Alboraya, Spain) and Natalie Harmata, (freshman, Sydney, Australia) both chipped in 10 points.

Guard Vanessa Jurewicz (sophomore, Stockholm, Sweden) led MCC with five rebounds to go along with eight points.

The coach was pleased with his three freshmen forwards: Noa Iglesias Chorda (Barcelona, Spain), Rebecca Dunn (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Tatyana Walrond (Bridgeton, Barbados)

"Our three forwards played really well today, Noa, Becca, and Taty," Pritchett said. "EWC was physical and those three didn't back down."

MCC improves to 1-2 on the year while Eastern Wyoming falls to 0-2.

MCC will be home Monday against Northwest Kansas Technical College at 6 p.m.

On Thursday MCC travels to Concordia, Kan. For a game with Cloud County Community College at 6 p.m.
