MCC Volleyball nets road sweep at Trinidad State

TRINIDAD, Colo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team swept Trinidad State Thursday, winning 25-10, 25-13 and 25-22.

"This is a good start to the week," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "We need to carry this into tomorrow."

With the sweep, MCC improves to 5-3 in the Region IX south standings in third place. With two region games remaining the team still has a chance to capture one of the top two seeds for the post-season tournament that will be held in Casper, Wyo.

MCC improves to 19-9 overall. Trinidad State falls to 1-6 in the south standings and 6-20 overall.

MCC will continue Region IX south-sub region play with critical match Friday at La Junta, Colo. against fourth place Otero Junior College.

That match is one of three on the south-sub region schedule. Second-place Northeastern Junior College travels to Scottsbluff to take on first-place Western Nebraska, and Lamar travels to Trinidad State.

On Thursday, sophomore Victoria Thomas (Houston, Texas) paced the MCC attack at the net with 13 kills and one assist block to go along with five digs and an ace. Fernanda Merancio (freshman, Lamar, Colo.) had eight kills, five digs and one assist block.

Freshman Gabby Caskey (Ogallala) was credited with five kills, eight digs, two assist blocks and one ace. Makayla Brown (sophomore, Colorado Springs) had four kills and two digs. Jisell Chumacero (sophomore, Eaton, Colo.) had four kills.

 Freshman Alexis Pontine (Ignacio, Colo.) led MCC with 24 assists as well as four digs, one kill and three aces. Jessie Jerome (freshman, Rawlins, Wyo.) added eight assists.

McKenna Crews (sophomore, Loveland, Colo.) had nine digs and one ace. Greta Bolognini (freshman, Bergamo Italy/ Parkview Christian, Lincoln, Neb.) had eight digs and one ace.
