MCC golfers shoot 11-under par to claim NJC meet by 15 strokes

STERLING, Colo. – The McCook Community Golf team shot eleven-under par Thursday to win the Northeastern Junior College tournament by 15 shots over Eastern Wyoming.

After starting the day just two shots ahead of second-place Eastern Wyoming, MCC shot past the Lancers with a 277 on Thursday while the Lancers shot a 290. Northeastern Junior College finished in third place with a 281.

"It was a good day for the team today" said MCC Coach Tyler Loop. "We had more putts dropped today but it's still something we will continue to work on."

MCC sophomore Ethan Gough (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) continues his strong season and came from two shots back on Wednesday to win top individual honors posting a 67 on Thursday to finish two shots ahead of Eastern Wyoming's George Cordall and NJC's Jackson Rottschafer.

Sophomore Cayden Wynne (Lincoln Southwest) fired a 68 on Thursday and took fourth place with a three-under 140 for the tournament. Sophomore Brayden Dahl (Outer West Durban, South Africa) finished sixth and was even-par (143) for the two rounds at NJC.

Jordan Bingham (sophomore, South Jordan, Utah) shot a 71 Thursday to finish in a tie for 11th place with a five-over 148. Cade Cryer (freshman, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) was six-over par for the tournament and Spencer Wishon (sophomore, Oberlin, Kan.) finished at eight-over.

Competing as individuals, sophomore Payton Craw (McCook) had one of his best tournaments of the year posting back-to-back rounds of 74 and 73 to finish in 10th place, he was four-over for the tournament. Freshman Hunter Hanson (McCook) had back-to-back rounds of 78 to finish at 156 (13-over) and freshman Ashton Koetter (Seward) finished with a 189.

MCC will travel to Torrington, Wyo. April 20-21 for the fifth of six Region IX tournaments this spring.

MCC picked up another 10 points for first place and leads the Region IX standings with 94 points, the Lancers are second with 79 points, NJC is third with 40 points and Otero fourth with 30 points.

"We'll need our best game next week to take down Eastern Wy on their home course," said Loop.

In the individual standings Gough leads the Region IX field with 85 points, Eastern's Cordall is second with 65. Cryer is third in the region with 45 points, Dahl is fourth with 36 points and Wynne is tied for sixth place with Rottschafer, both have 33 points.
