MCC Softball splits pair of Saturday games in Cisco Invite

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The McCook Community College softball team scored a 15-13 walk-off win in the morning game after giving up a 13-3 lead in the fifth inning. Odessa Community College beat MCC in the second game 11-2.

Cisco went to 11-4 with the loss, Odessa improved to 11-2.

MCC goes to 2-3 on the season and will head to Burlington, Iowa next weekend for six indoor games against six opponents, two each on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

McCook CC 15, Cisco CC 13: – After giving up two runs in the first inning, MCC scored the next eight runs after a seven-run second inning.

A triple by Paige Smith (freshman Perth, Australia), drove home the first run of the game after a leadoff walk.

MCC exploded for seven runs in the second with bats responding for seven singles and taking advantage of two Wrangler errors. Cortez and Sydney Erlandson (freshman, Woodbury, Minn.) both had two-run singles.

In the MCC fourth, the first two batters of the inning reached base after being hit by pitched balls, followed by a sacrifice bunt and three straight RBI singles from Erlandson, Tyler Mooring (freshman, Santa Clara, Utah) and Nevaeh Ogden (freshman, Littleton, Colo.). With two-out Alexis Cortez (sophomore, Arvada, Colo) lined a two-run single to left to put MCC up 13-3.

Mooring started the game in the circle and went 5.1 innings before the Wranglers got to her in the fifth and sixth innings. She allowed 11 hits and 10 earned runs, walked one and fanned four before turning the ball over to Anna Wilcox (sophomore, Victoria, British Columbia) who allowed one unearned run to make it a 13-11 MCC lead.

Cisco tied the game with a two-out single in the top of the seventh.

Cortez led off the MCC seventh with a single and advanced to second on a bunt single by Rae VanMilligan (sophomore, Marion, Iowa). Both runners moved up a base on an error on the play. Sophomore Ashland Baca (sophomore, Byers, Colo.) ended the game doubling to center on a 1-2 pitch.

Wilcox picked up the win, hurling 1.2 innings, allowing four hits, one walk and two earned runs.

Cortez went three-for-four with four RBIs. Erlandson went three-for-four with three RBIs and MCC got two hit games from Baca, Smith, Mooring and Ogden.

Odessa CC 11, McCook CC 2: – Odessa applied early and steady pressure scoring four runs in the first and five more in the second to take a five-inning win over MCC.

The Wranglers out-hit MCC 11-4.

Down 4-1 in the second inning, MCC got on the scoreboard by virtue of singles by Paige Smith and Tyler Mooring and an RBI-groundout off the bat of Madisyn Simms (freshman, Port Moody, British Columbia).

MCC picked up its second run in the fifth. Nevaeh Ogden picked up a one-out bunt single, went to second on a hit-by-pitch, advanced to third on an infield groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

Smith started the game for MCC pitching three innings and allowing nine earned runs. Avery O'Neil (sophomore, Ellsworth, Wis.) pitched the final inning, allowing one hit and no runs.
