MCC Softball scores 30 to sweep doubleheader in New Mexico

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The McCook Community College softball team got back on the winning track Saturday, taking two games from Luna Community College 13-0, and 17-2.

Paige Smith (freshman Perth, Australia) smashed a grand slam homer in the opening inning of Game 1 and freshmen Tyler Mooring (Santa Clara, Utah) and Alyssa Winter (Lexington) hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning to put Luna away by the 10-run rule.

In the fourth inning of Game 2, the first seven hitters reached base with hits, followed by a walk, a three run home run by Madisyn Simms (freshman, Port Moody, British Columbia), an error and two more hits to take a 13-1 lead and added four more in the fifth inning.

MCC improves to 13-13 on the season and 5-3 in Region IX play.

Luna Community College falls to 5-24, 1-8.

The teams play a doubleheader Sunday at noon.

GAME 1 - McCook CC 13, Luna CC 0: MCC posted a five-run first inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Paige Smith, added one run in the third, two in the fourth on a pair of sacrifice flies, and finished the game off with five more runs in the fifth inning to hold on for the five-inning win.

Anna Wilcox (sophomore, Victoria, British Columbia) started in the circle for MCC had allowed two hits in four innings. Tyler Mooring pitched the fifth and allowed one hit while striking out two.

MCC pounded out 19 hits in the game including a four-for-four game by Smith, three-hit games from Alexis Cortez (sophomore, Arvada, Colo.), Madisyn Simms and Taylor Thein (sophomore, West Branch, Iowa), and two-hit games by Mooring and Sydney Erlandson (freshman, Woodbury, Minn.).

GAME 2 - McCook CC 17 Luna CC 2: Leading 2-1 in the fourth inning, MCC put the game away scoring 11 runs when the first 13 batters of the inning reached base on 12 hits and one Luna error.

Madisyn Simms' three-run home run put MCC up 12-1 and MCC added four more runs in the fifth inning.

Tyler Mooring pitched the first four innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and three strikeouts. Offensively she had four hits and five RBIs.

The seventh, eighth, and ninth-place hitters in the MCC batting order all had three hits games including Sydney Erlandson, Rae VanMilligan (sophomore, Marion, Iowa), and Taylor Thein.

Paige Smith pitched the final inning and allowed three hits, but no runs.

MCC outhit Luna 21-6.

MCC also got two-hit games from Simms, Alexis Cortez (sophomore, Arvada, Colo.), and Nevaeh Ogden (freshman, Littleton, Colo.).
