MCC Softball sweeps Lamar in pair of five-inning games

The McCook Community College softball team won the first game of a four-game series with Lamar Friday winning both ends of a doubleheader 12-2 and 12-4.

MCC responded from a 2-1 deficit in the fourth inning of Game 1 to score 11 runs and put the first game away in five innings. In Game 2 MCC had big production in the first and fourth inning put that game away on the eight-run rule.

MCC outhit Lamar 24-8 on the afternoon led by freshman Madisyn Simms (freshman, Port Moody, British Columbia) who had six on the day and Nevaeh Ogden (freshman, Littleton, Colo.) who had four. Sophomore Ashland Baca (Byers, Colo.) hit home runs in both games and has 12 for the season.

MCC improves to 27-15 overall and 13-5 in Region IX

Lamar falls to 10-32 and 8-16 in Region IX games.

After an early season win over Lamar at home in the Region IX showcase in early March, MCC looks to sweep the five-game season series with the Lopes Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.

GAME 1 – McCook CC 12 Lamar CC 2: The home team got on the scoreboard in the second on a one-out double by Madisyn Simms and a two-out RBI single by freshman Sydney Erlandson (Woodbury, Minn.).

Starting pitcher Avery O'Neil (sophomore, Ellsworth, Wis.) held the Lopes in check in her two innings of work, she walked one, struck out five didn't allow a hit. Anna Wilcox (sophomore, Victoria, British Columbia) came on for two innings, allowed two unearned runs on two hits and two strikeouts.

MCC batted around the order twice in the 11-run fourth inning. Ashland Baca (sophomore, Byers, Colo.) started the offensive parade with a solo home run (her 11th of the season) to tie the game. Simms and Tyler Mooring (freshman, Santa Clara, Utah) doubled to put MCC up 3-2. After one out, MCC sent eight straight hitters to the plate ending with a three-run homer by Mooring. MCC had nine hits in the inning including five extra-base hits, and four walks.

Freshman Paige Smith (Perth, Australia) pitched a scoreless fifth inning allowing one hit and striking out two.

MCC outhit Lamar 12-3 and the team was led by Simms with three and two by Mooring and Nevaeh Ogden.

GAME 2 – McCook CC 12, Lamar CC 8: McCook jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed. Nevaeh Ogden led off the inning with a single, stole second and came home on an error. After a walk, Alexis Cortez lined an RBI triple and scored on Ashland Baca's second homer of the day. Madisyn Simms doubled and Sydney Erlandson capped the scoring with an RBI single.

Avery O'Neil pitched the first two innings for MCC allowing one unearned run on two walks and three strikeouts.

MCC got that run back on an RBI double by Baca in the second to lead 6-1.

Anna Wilcox pitched 1.2 innings in relief and allowed a pair of unearned runs on four hits and two strikeouts as Lamar scored twice in the fourth to pull within 6-3.

Seven of the first eight hitters reached base in the MCC fourth ending with a Simms RBI-single, a Tyler Mooring double a Paige Smith two-run double and an Erlandson RBI-double.

 Mooring finished the game in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing one run on one hit.

MCC outhit Lamar 12-5 with a three-hit game by Simms and two hits each by Ogden, Baca, and Erlandson.
