MCC women pick up region win at Lamar

LAMAR, Colo. – A resilient McCook Community College women's basketball team scored a come-from-behind 52-49 win Saturday on the road over Lamar Community College.

"I thought our resilience down the stretch won us the game," said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett.

The coach said the team didn't have a very good start to the game in the first quarter.

"We played slow and didn't attack hard," said Pritchett. "Defensively we were right there and that's what kept us in the game through the half."

According to the coach, the team came out after half with much better energy and played with tempo.

"We executed and made shots to get us back into the game," said Pritchett.

The Runnin' Lopes made some big 3-point shots and took a four-point lead, but the MCC team didn't back down.

One of the key plays down the stretch was when sophomore Audra Vine (Thornton, Colo.) hit a long field-goal that was originally thought to be a 3-pointers, but was called back.

"Audra made that huge 'long 2' and then we defended great the last two possessions – really it was some of the best defense we had all year," said Pritchett.

No statistics were available at publication time.

Lamar goes to 4-14 on the season and 0-2 in the Region IX South division.

The Lady Indians improve to 11-8 and 2-1 in the south Region.

"I'm really proud of how we fought today," said Prichett.

On Tuesday MCC returns home for another big region game, hosting Northeastern Junior College (20-2, 2-0 in Region IX South) at 5:30 p.m.

On Friday the team travels to Scottsbluff for another south region game with Western Nebraska. The Lady Indians' next home game is Jan. 30 against North Platte.
