Lady Indians pick Region IX win over Otero

LA JUNTA, Colo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team picked up its first Region IX South win Friday, sweeping Otero Junior College. MCC won 25-16, 25-20 and 25-12.

"It ended up being a good match but started off really shaky," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

Sophomores Jordan Duzenack (Loveland, Colo.) and Fernanda Merancio (Lamar, Colo.) led the MCC attack with 11 kills each. Merancio added two assist blocks and Duzenack one.

"Jordan Duzenack had a great game on the net," said Kobza.

Gabby Caskey (sophomore, Ogallala) put down nine kills from the middle with one solo block. Freshman April Conilogue (Longmont, Colo.) had four assist blocks and a solo block.

Freshman Romina Martinez (Cochabamba, Bolivia) led MCC with 13 digs and added two kills. Greta Bolognini (sophomore, Bergamo, Italy) was credited with eight digs. Sophomore Jessie Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) had five digs, four kills and two aces. Freshman Caylin Barnett (Southwest H.S.) had four digs and one ace.

Otero goes to 0-2 in the south standings and 6-14 on the season. MCC improves to 1-2 in the region and 15-9 overall.

"We just have to prepare for tomorrow," Kobza said.

On Saturday MCC travels to Trinidad, Colo. to take on Trinidad State at 2 p.m. The Trojans are off to a 2-0 start in Region IX south play and 12-11 on the season.
