Trinidad State tops MCC Volleyball in four sets

TRINIDAD, Colo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team dropped a four-set match on the road Saturday at Trinidad State.

MCC opened the day with a 25-20 first-set win.

"We had great momentum in the first set. We were up by 10 points, 14-4 and got complacent at the end," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "And then I felt that carried over into the second set."

MCC dropped the final three sets, 19-25, 20-25, 21-25.

"We played timid and not to win," said Kobza. "That's an easy fix though, it's in the decision of our players to come in and be ready to play next time."

Jessie Jerome (sophomore, Rawlins, Wyo.) led MCC with 21 assists to go along with seven digs, four kills and five assist blocks. Freshman Kayten Hagan (Kearney) had 13 assists and five digs.

Sophomore Greta Bolognini (Bergamo, Italy/Parkview Christian, Lincoln, Neb.) led MCC with 15 digs. Freshman Caylin Barnett (McCook) had seven digs.

Freshman Romina Martinez (Cochabama, Bolivia) had eight kills, five digs and one solo block. Sophomore Fernanda Merancio (Lamar, Colo.) had eight kills. Rowan Tribelhorn (freshman, Yuma, Colo.) had four kills and two assist blocks and sophomore Jordan Duzenack (Loveland, Colo.) had two kills and an assist block.

Sophomore Gabby Caskey (Ogallala) had nine kills and eight assist blocks. Freshman April Conilogue (Longmont, Colo.) was credited with three kills, one assist block and one solo block.

The Trojans improve to 3-0 in Region IX south play and 13-11 on the season.

MCC falls to 1-3 in the region and 15-10 overall.

On Tuesday MCC travels to Columbus for a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference match with Central Community College.

On Friday MCC will be home to host Lamar at 6 p.m. in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
