MCC baseball splits another Empire League doubleheader
For the sixth straight series, the McCook Community College baseball team has split an Empire League doubleheader. The latest came Friday as the Indians beat Otero Junior College in the first game 9-8 in eight innings, but Otero came back to take the second game 10-8.MCC took a 3-0 lead in Game 1 only to have the Rattlers score seven times in the fifth inning to lead 8-3 before MCC scored twice in the sixth, three times in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and win it in the eighth.
The Indians surrendered a 7-6 lead in Game 2 as Otero scored twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh.
Freshman Daniel Bannon (Sydney, Australia) homered in both games. Sophomore Kade Wroot (North Platte) had two home runs and went three-for-three Game 1. Sophomore Ricardo Hernandez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) went three-for-four with two RBIs in Game 2, and Caleb Eiguren, (sophomore, Broomfield, Colo.) had four hits in the doubleheader including the game-winner in Game 1.
Otero goes to 9-23 on the season and 5-15 in Empire League Play (Region IX).
The Indians go to 17-16 and 9-8 in the Empire League standings.
The two teams will be right back at it Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

GAME 1 McCook CC 9, Otero JC 8: The Indians scored single runs in the first three innings: an RBI-single by Zack Beatty (freshman, Maple Park, Ill.); an error, two walks and a fielder's choice in the second; and a solo home run by Kaleb Wroot in the third inning.
Otero finally got to MCC starter Max Mrakovcic (freshman, Sydney, Australia) in the fourth inning then exploded for seven in the fifth. Mrakovcic allowed six hits, walked four and struck out seven.
After Eduardo Ojeda (sophomore, Coral Springs, Texas) pitched a scoreless sixth, the Indians scored twice in the bottom of the inning on another Wroot solo home run to cut the Otero lead to 8-4. Sophomore Elijah Munoz, (Big Spring, Texas) had an RBI double to make the score 8-5.
Freshman Blake Davidson (Calgary, Alberta) pitched a scoreless seventh. Daniel Bannon homered to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning. Ricardo Hernandez followed with a single and after one out, MCC got consecutive singles from Wroot, Caleb Eiguren, a bases-loaded walk from Melwin Perez (sophomore, San Sebastian, Puerto Rico) and a two-out RBI single by Munoz to tie the game.
Jordan Muschalcheck (freshman, Odessa, Texas) pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
MCC began the inning with a walk, a flyout, a flyout, and two walks before Eiguren hit the game-winning single to right field.
Wroot had a three-hit, two homer game, MCC got two each from Munoz, Bannon and Eiguren.
GAME 2 Otero JC 10, McCook CC 8: Otero scored two in the first and three in the second inning while MCC scored three in the first and two in the second to tie the game at 5-5. Daniel Bannon homered in the first and Melwin Perez delivered a two-out, two-run RBI single. Ricardo Hernandez tied the game with a two-run single in the second.
The Rattlers took a 6-5 lead in the fourth but in the bottom of the inning, an Otero error and a walk set up Caleb Eiguren's run-scoring single and MCC led 7-6 on an RBI-groundout with Perez batting.
Austin Mathews (sophomore, Clearwater, Fla.) went six innings for MCC, but not before surrendering the lead 8-7. He allowed seven earned runs on eight hits, four walks and eight strikeouts.
MCC tied the game 8-8 in the bottom of the sixth on singles from Hernandez, Beatty and Eiguren.
Otero scored twice in the top of the seventh off Jordan Muschalcheck and MCC went quietly in the seventh.
