MCC Baseball wins 16-4 over Frank Phillips CC in Texas

BORGER, Texas -- The McCook Community College baseball team picked up a 16-4 win Friday over Frank Phillips Community College. MCC broke open a 4-1 game in the fifth inning with back-to-back six-run innings.

"I'm just happy with how the day played out," said MCC Coach Jon Olsen.

Sophomore Alex Lozada (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) picked up the win on the mound going five innings allowing four hits, one earned run and one walk. He struck out seven. Sophomore Owen Lester (St. Charles, Ill.) pitched two innings, and allowed two hits, two walks and three earned runs. He fanned three.

"We got another great start this time from Alex, I think that is 11 innings pitched and one run allowed from our two starters and we got great production from the bottom of the lineup today," Olsen said.

Sophomore Caleb Eiguren, (Broomfield, Colo.) banged out three hits for MCC and the team got 10 RBIs from the eighth and ninth place hitters in the batting order in freshman Riley Watson (Sydney, Australia) and sophomore Matt Hamilton (Aurora, Colo.). Both players went two-for-three at the plate

"Matt and Riley were productive and we took advantage of some free bases, but you still have to drive them in," Olsen said.

MCC took a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a two-out walk from Daniel Bannon (Sydney, Australia) who advanced to second on a steal, went to third on a balk and scored on a passed ball.

MCC got a walk and a single to start the fourth inning and scored three runs with Hamilton driving home two runs with a two-out single and later made it a 4-0 game on a wild pitch.

After the first two outs of the MCC fifth, the visitors scored unearned six runs, the first two coming on bases-loaded hit by pitches and the final four coming on a grand slam by Watson to go up 10-1.

Sophomore Elijah Munoz (Big Spring, Texas) led off the MCC sixth with a home run. Later in the inning Hamilton delivered a two-out, two-run RBI, Watson singled home the fourth run of the inning and Bannon's two-run single capped the scoring.

"This is a long good weekend for us and we obviously can't be satisfied with just one game, hopefully we can carry it over," Olsen said.

The Plainsmen fall to 1-3 on the season.

MCC goes to 2-0 and will play a pair of games Saturday in Dodge City, Kan. starting with an 11 a.m. game against Highland Community College and following that with a 3 p.m. game against Dodge City. On Sunday MCC faces off again against Dodge City at noon.
