MCC’s Alex Lozada tabbed for Region IX Pitcher of the Week

For the second time this season, McCook Community College Alex Lozada had been named the Region IX Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

On Friday in Game 2 of a doubleheader, Lozada tossed a five-inning no-hitter against Luna Community College. He struck out nine hitters and walked three in the team's 10-0 win to help MCC sweep the Rough Riders over the weekend in the four-game series.

This was the second straight start that Lozada, who will play next year at Division I Jackson State in Mississippi, was part of a no-hitter.

The sophomore started a game Feb. 18 against Clarendon College but had to leave after one inning pitched because of an injury. Relievers Cade Webber (freshman, Kelowna, British Columbia) and sophomore Owen Lester (St. Charles, Ill.) finished out the 16-0 no-hitter that day without allowing a hit in the seven inning game.

Lozada, was unable to pitch for almost a month after the injury until tossing one-third of an inning in a relief role March 20.

The right-hander from Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Trujillo, Puerto Rico, came to MCC in the fall of 2019 as a freshman and didn't see the field in a Covid-shortened 2019-2020.

For the season he has appeared in four games, starting three and is 2-0 with a 3.97 ERA. He has struck out 17 hitters in 11.1 innings pitched, allowed six hits while walking three. Last year he went 4-3 in eight starts with a 6.70 ERA and struck out 54 hitters in 41.2 innings.
