Colby Baseball takes Tuesday slugfest over MCC, 14-12

The McCook Community College baseball team dropped a 14-12 decision to Colby Tuesday but made things interesting in the ninth inning. Trailing 14-7, MCC sent 10 hitters to the plate and loaded the bases with one out, but grounded into a double play to end the game.

"I felt like we competed well, we put ourselves in position to win it at the end," said MCC Coach Jon Olsen.

MCC had five home runs on the afternoon and took the lead with a solo home run from sophomore Zack Beatty (Maple Park, Ill.) in the first inning and added two in the second on a two-run home run by Daegen Morocom (Winnipeg, Manitoba), to put MCC up 3-0.

Freshman Cade Webber (Kelowna, British Columbia) held Colby scoreless in his two innings of work with no hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

"It was a really hard day to pitch with the wind howling out against a good hitting team and I thought we went after them for the most part," Olsen said. "A couple guys were really, really good."

Colby responded with five runs in the third inning. Tristan Browning (Haslet, Texas) allowed three hits, four earned runs and walked two. C.J. Allen (Salado, Texas) pitched a scoreless fourth inning.

MCC tied the game at 5-5 with a two run home run by Markus Coronado (sophomore, Irving, Texas) in the fourth inning and took a 6-5 lead in the sixth on a two-out RBI-single by Jordan DeMarce (sophomore, Las Vegas).

Colby scored two runs in the sixth off Owen Lester (St. Charles, Ill.), in his second inning of work. He allowed two hits and two runs, walked one and struck out five.

MCC tied the game 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth on a walk, a hit batter and a two-out single by Riley Watson (Sydney, Australia). Colby responded with two more runs in the seventh to reclaim the lead, 9-7, off freshman Jelle Bing (Heerhagoaard, Netherlands) who allowed one unearned run on three hits and a strikeout.

Colby scored five times in the ninth inning in the second inning of work off Jordan Muschalek (Odessa, Texas).

Trailing 14-7 in the ninth, MCC was able to come back with a pair of runs on a Watson home run and three more on a round-tripper from DeMarce and loaded the bases with one out, but couldn't bring the tying or winning runs home.

"I thought we'd get it there in the ninth," Olsen said. "We were just one swing short, just need to get ready to go for the weekend."

MCC outhit Colby 14-10 and got two-hit games from Bannon, Coronado, Watson, Elijah Munoz, and DeMarce.
