MCC Baseball drops finale to Colby; on to Regionals Friday
COLBY, Kan. – The McCook Community College baseball team lost its final regular game of the season Tuesday falling to Colby Community College 6-3.
Colby took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off sophomore starter Eduardo Ojeda (Coral Springs, Fla) and the score remained 1-0 until the sixth inning when the Trojans added two more and took a 6-0 lead with three runs in the seventh.
MCC came back to score three runs in the eighth inning. Sophomore Daegen Morocom (Winnipeg, Manitoba) hit a two-run home run to put MCC on the scoreboard and sophomore Jaiden Holley (Brisbane, Australia) had an RBI groundout to make it a 6-3 Colby lead.
MCC was held to five hits in the game with two from Oliver Davies (Sydney, Australia)
Ojeda went two innings and allowed one earned run and struck out six
Freshman Jackson Bigge (Fort Collins, Colo.) pitched two scoreless innings, striking out two. C.J. Allen (freshman, Salado, Texas) pitched one inning and allowed one hit one strikeout.
Rylan Wallingford (freshman, Fort Calhoun, Neb.) pitched two frames and gave up seven hits, five runs. Owen lester pitched one scoreless inning with a strikeout.
Colby goes to 34-16 on the season, MCC finishes at 28-28.
MCC will begin post-season play Friday for the first round of the Region IX playoffs at Lamar, Colo. The Runnin' Lopes host MCC in a best-of-three series with a doubleheader set for Friday at 2 p.m. (MT). If necessary, a third game (nine innings) would be played Saturday at noon (MT.) The winner of the series advances to Colorado Springs the following weekend where the final four teams will play in a double-elimination bracket for the Region IX title.
Lamar finished second in the Empire League South Division with a 15-19 record in Region IX. MCC was third in the Empire League North Division with a 17-17 record.
In other first-round series Southeast Community College (first in the north) will host Luna Community College (fourth in the south); Trinidad State (first in the south) will host Western Nebraska (fourth in the north), and Northeastern Junior College (second in the north) will host Otero (third in the south.)
