MCC Baseball scores 29 runs in Sunday sweep over Labette

PARSONS, Kan. – The McCook Community College baseball team swept a pair of games Sunday over Labette Community College 18-3 and 11-1

"It was a good day today. We put all three phases together for the most part, didn't give up much run-wise," said MCC Coach Jon Olsen.

MCC scored in every inning in Game 1 and pounded out 13 hits in five innings. MCC's offense was led by home runs from freshmen Michael Quick (Oshawa, Ontario), Zeke Minic (Thornton, Colo.), and Jason Serafinchon (Spruce Grove, Alberta).

"We played pretty well offensively and really got it going both games and with two really good performances on the mound," said Olsen.

Sophomore Mikey Acierno (sophomore, Thornton, Colo.) picked up a complete game win in the first game and freshman Myles Chabi (Sydney, Australia) pitched a one-hit complete game over five innings in Game 2.

MCC goes to 4-5 on the season with five games on tap this week starting Monday at noon with the final game of the three-game series with Labette. On Wednesday MCC travels to Garden City for a 2 p.m. game.

On Saturday MCC is scheduled to open the Region IX portion of the schedule at home with a three-game series against Northeastern Junior College. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. with Sunday's game starting at 1 p.m.

GAME 1 –McCook 18, Labette CC 3: MCC scored single runs in the first and second innings, added four each in the third and fourth and piled on eight runs in the fifth. Michael Quick led the MCC offense with a home run and a double with three RBIs. Ethan Murdoch (sophomore, Swift Current, Saskatchewan) swatted a pair of doubles and a single. Zeke Minic hit a three-run homer. Jason Serafinchon had a home run, a single and three driven in and sophomore Josh Maysonave (Austin, Texas) had a two-hit game with two RBIs.

Starting pitcher Mikey Acierno went the distance on the mound to pick up the win. He allowed five hits, two earned runs, one walk and he struck out three.

GAME 2 –McCook 11, Labette CC 1: The MCC offense picked up where it left off in Game 1 with a five-run first inning. Sophomore Oliver Davies (Canberra, Australia) lined a bases-loaded double to put MCC up 2-0 and Jason Serafinchon followed with a two-run double to make it a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Abel Reyes (sophomore, Puerto Caimito, Panama) lined an RBI-double put MCC up 5-0.

After an MCC error in the bottom of the first, pitcher Myles Chabi allowed his only hit of the game to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard. Davies put MCC up 7-1 in the second with a two-out double.

"Ollie had a couple big doubles his first two at bats," said Olsen.

After two outs in the fifth inning, MCC put four more runs on the board, keyed by a double from sophomore transfer Alliskair Descartes (Thornton, Colo.), an RBI-single by sophomore Trent Elshire (Plattsmouth) and a two-run home run by Michael Quick, his second of the day.

MCC finished with 10 hits including three by Ethan Murdoch and two from Davies.

Chabi picked up the win on the mound over five innings, allowing just the one hit, no earned runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.
