MCC Baseball registers 7-1 over Northeast CC

ELKHORN – Timely hitting, sharp defense and eight pitchers helped lead the McCook Community College baseball team to a 7-1 win over Northeast Community College (Norfolk) at Frerichs Field in Elkhorn Wednesday.

MCC got a pair of home runs from sophomore Josh Maysonave (Austin, Texas), a two-run homer from freshman Jackson Yeager (Omaha Westside) and seven relievers who each pitched a scoreless inning.

"This was a really good win for us. We needed it after Sunday to get going back in the right direction," said MCC Coach Jon Olsen.

After the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second, MCC scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and three in the fifth.

Freshman Michael Quick (Oshawa, Ontario) started the MCC offense in the third inning with a one-out double. After a walk, sophomore Maysonave powered a two-run homerun to put MCC up 3-1. After two outs, Yeager singled, and after a wild pitch he scored on a double off the bat of sophomore Alliskair Descartes (Thornton, Colo.).

Maysonave led off the fifth inning with a solo home run. After a double from Abel Reyes (sophomore, Puerto Caimito, Panama) Jackson made it a 7-1 game with his two-run home run.

"It was just a fun game for us, obviously Josh had a huge day at the plate and Yaeger got a two-run homer to help us add on," Olsen said.

Sophomore Owen Lester (St. Charles, Ill.) started the game on the mound and went two innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. From there the MCC bullpen kept the Hawks scoreless with one inning apiece from Victor Nane, (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), Jelle Bing (Heerhagoaard, Netherlands), Zack Lane (Phoenix, Ariz.), William Coe (North Platte, Neb.), Jackson Bigge (Fort Collins, Colo.), Jereniel Herrera (Panama City, Panama) and Ethan Badcock (Adelade, Australia).

"We played an extremely clean game, we threw eight guys and for a couple it was their first time out and they were all really really good," Olsen said.

 MCC pitchers held NECC to five hits and two walks and struck out one.

"Defensively we turned six double plays. I don't think I've ever that in a game," Olsen said.

Offensively MCC totaled 10 hits in the game with two each from Maysonave, Yeager and Descartes.

The Hawks go to 8-5 on the season.

MCC improves to 6-8. Next up is a four-game series at Trinidad State with doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, starting both days at 2 p.m. (CT).
