MCC Baseball sweeps Runnin’ Lopes in Sunday doubleheader

The McCook Community College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Lamar Community College Sunday in the Jaycees Sports Complex winning 19-5 and 5-2.

"It was a good day today obviously and we got a couple good starts from our starting pitchers," said MCC Coach Jon Olsen.

Sophomore Mikey Acierno (Thornton, Colo.) picked up the complete-game win in Game 1 over five innings and freshman Freshman Myles Chabi (Sydney, Australia), went the distance in Game 2.

MCC started the four-game home series scoring 14 first-inning runs in Game 1 and got a pair of home runs from sophomore Ethan Murdoch (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) as the home team won 19-5 in a five-inning game. In Game 2, MCC came back from a 2-1 deficit in the fourth inning to tie the game on a solo home run by sophomore Abel Reyes (sophomore, Puerto Caimito, Panama) and added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.

"We had some good situational hitting in the second game to score the go-head and a couple insurance runs," said Olsen.

MCC improves to 11-13 and 5-7 in the Region IX Empire League. Lamar is 8-21 and 4-8 in the region.

The two teams play another doubleheader Monday starting at 1 p.m.

"I hope we come out focused and ready to go tomorrow, day twos have still been getting us, we need to start playing better on the second day," said Olsen.

GAME 1 – McCook CC 19, Lamar CC 5: Ethan Murdoch started off the scoring with a two-run home run in the first – an inning which included 18 MCC batters, six hits, five walks, a hit batter, three Lamar errors and seven wild pitches.

Murdoch launched another two-run homer in the second to put MCC up 16-0.

After Lamar scored four times in the third, freshman Zeke Minic (Thornton, Colo.) led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run. He doubled in a run in a three-run fourth inning and scored the final run of the game on a wild pitch.

Mikey Acierno picked up the complete-game win, allowing five hits, four earned runs, one walk and six strikeouts.

"I thought Mikey did a pretty good job in Game 1. That was a tough game to throw, after having to sit a long time between first and second innings," said Olsen. "It's kind of hard to keep focus in a game like that, he had the one rough inning but other than that he did a nice job doing what he needed to do."

MCC had 10 hits, getting two-hit games by Murdoch, Minic, sophomore Alliskair Descartes (Thornton, Colo.) and sophomore Josh Maysonave (Austin, Texas).

GAME 2 – McCook CC 5, Lamar CC 2: McCook broke out on top 1-0 with a solo homerun from Alliskair Descartes in the first inning.

The Runnin' Lopes scored twice in the third to reclaim the lead 2-1, but MCC tied it in the fourth inning on a leadoff solo homer from Abel Reyes.

MCC loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and pushed across the go-ahead run on singles by Ethan Murdoch and Josh Maysonave, a Reyes walk and a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Jason Serafinchon (freshman, Spruce Grove, Alberta). A sacrifice fly in the sixth by Murdoch put MCC up 4-2, and a bases-loaded Maysonave walk accounted for the final run.

Myles Chabi (Sydney, Australia), went the distance for MCC to pick up the win, allowing five hits, three walks, no earned runs and six strikeouts in seven innings of work.

MCC had eight hits with three by Descartes and two by sophomore Riley Watson (Sydney, Australia).
