Ethan Murdoch, Myles Chabi named All-Region IX; Michael Quick second team

Two McCook Community College baseball players have been selected to the Region IX first team and another was named to the second team, according to a vote of the eight coaches.

Starting pitcher Myles Chabi and outfielder Ethan Murdoch were picked for the first team and designated hitter/catcher Michael Quick was named to the second team.

Murdoch, a 6-2 sophomore outfielder from Swift Current, Saskatchewan, led MCC offensively batting .405 with 17 home runs and 74 RBIs in 56 games. The right-hander had 21 doubles and four triples. He had a .496 on-base average and slugged .786. His 42 extra-base hits and 164 total bases, both rank 10th in the nation, he's 17th in RBIs and 22nd in home runs.

Chabi, a 6-1 right-handed freshman from Sydney, Australia, led all Region IX pitchers in wins and was second in earned run average, compiling a 9-3 record with a 3.96 E.R.A in 14 starts. He struck out 52 hitters in 61.1 innings, allowed 53 hits and walked 21. Ten of his starts came in Region IX games where he went 6-2 with four complete games and two shutouts. After starting the season 2-3 with a 4.48 ERA, he won his final seven decisions.

Quick, a 5-10 freshman from Oshawa, Ontario batted .361 with six home runs and 47 RBIs in 48 games. Batting mostly as a leadoff designated hitter. He had 17 doubles and five triples, scored 70 runs, got on base 44.5 percent of his plate appearances and slugged .597.

Tyler Bishop of Southeast Community College was named the Region IX most valuable player. Western Nebraska's Shintaro Inoue was named freshman of the year. Otero Junior College's Phil Carter was named the league's top pitcher and Trinidad State catcher Luis Ayala was named Defensive Player of the year.
