Indians split Sunday games at Labette CC

PARSONS, Kan. – The McCook Community College baseball team split a pair of Sunday games at Labette Community College, winning 10-5 and losing 10-0.

"It was good to get into the win column in Game 1," said MCC Coach Jon Olsen. "Game 2 was just not good all the way around."

In Game 1, Sophomore Jason Serafinchon (Spruce Grove, Alberta) led a 12-hit Indian offense in the opener with a third-inning grand slam and freshman Maddox Shaver (Belleville Ontario) went four-for-four to back starting pitcher Aiden Johnson (sophomore, Westminster, Colo.).

"I thought we had some timely hitting and defended the field, got a good start from Aiden and Ethan Badcock was pretty good his first two innings of relief, just lost a little control in the seventh," said Olsen.

MCC committed four errors in Game 2, managed three singles on offense and gave up 10 runs.

"We didn't hit, pitch, or defend, usually it doesn't happen where all three phases aren't there, but it sure was Game 2," said Olsen. "That is one you just hope doesn't linger and we can get back after it tomorrow."

Labette goes to 1-7 on the season, MCC is 1-3 and the two teams will wrap up the series Monday at 1 p.m. in a nine-inning game.

GAME 1 – McCook CC 10, Labette CC 5: Jason Serafinchon's grand slam in the third inning helped MCC overtake a 2-1 deficit in the third inning.

The Indians scored twice in the fourth on a two-out error and an RBI-single by Maddox Shaver to put MCC up 7-2.

Starting pitcher Aiden Johnson went four innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, four walks and eight strikeouts.

After the Cardinals got a run back in the fifth, MCC scored twice in the sixth inning on solo home runs by sophomore Blake Dale (Riverton, Wyo.) and Maddox to give the Indians a 9-3 lead.

In the seventh inning, a two-out RBI by sophomore Michael Quick (Oshawa, Ontario) drove in Will Edwards (sophomore, Sydney, Australia) who singled to open the inning.

Sophomore Ethan Badcock (Adelaide, Australia) picked up the three-inning save, allowing two earned runs on four hits and four strikeouts.

"I felt like we played really good for 6.5 innings, but we didn't close it out like we should have in the bottom of the seventh, but we had built a big lead which is all part of it," said Olsen.

In addition to the four-hit game by Shaver, the Indians got two-hit games from Serafinchon and Cory Wouters (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).

GAME 2 – Labette CC 10, McCook CC 0: The Cardinals scored two runs off MCC starter Myles Chabi (sophomore, Sydney, Australia) in the second inning and added a run in the third, four in the fourth and three in the fifth to cap off the five-inning win.

Chabi allowed four earned runs in 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits, one walk and one strikeout. Sophomore Blake Benallo (Thornton, Colo.) came on in the fourth inning and allowed two earned runs on three hits, one walk and one strikeout.

MCC committed four errors and were outhit 9-3 – all singles, by Cory Wouters, Blake Dale and freshman Owen Glover (Elderslice, New South Wales).
