MCC Baseball falls twice to Clarendon College

CLARENDON, Texas – The McCook Community College baseball team lost a pair of games to Clarendon College Friday 5-3 and 12-5.

MCC ran into a buzzsaw in the mound in Game 1 and struggled in numerous areas in the Game 2 loss.

"Myles Chabi threw a pretty good Game 1 start," said MCC Coach Jon Olsen. "They had some guys that can swing the bat and he controlled them outside of one 0-2 pitch that they drove in two runs off of, but he was good and we defended the field."

MCC didn't score any runs off CC starter Joel Hogan until the final inning.

"It was the best arm we have been up again this spring so far, he was really good, we obviously didn't get anything going until the seventh, but it was a good game."

The coach said Game 2 was more of what has plagued the team all year -- too many free passes, too many defensive miscues, not enough at the plate.

"We have things we can do well we just have to do them on a much more consistent level," said Olsen. "We have some good arms going tomorrow and I am looking forward to getting back to it."

Clarendon improves to 3-1. MCC falls to 1-6. The two teams will conclude the three-game series with a nine-inning game Saturday starting a 1 p.m.

GAME 1 – Clarendon College 5, McCook CC 3: The Bulldogs broke out on top with a run in the first, added two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.

Sophomore Myles Chabi (Sydney, Australia) got the start on the mound and went the distance allowing eight hits, two walks and three strikeouts over six innings.

MCC scored three times in the seventh on a hit batter, a walk, and a two-out triple by freshman Maddox Shaver (Belleville Ontario), who later scored.

The Indians were held to five hits. Freshman Cory Wouters (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) had a two-hit game.

GAME 2 – Clarendon College 12, McCook CC 5: The Bulldogs scored five runs in the third inning and four in the seventh inning and never trailed in the game.

After Clarendon scored twice in the first, MCC tied the game in the third. Jean Duran (San Carlos, Dominican Republic) led the inning off with a single but was later caught trying to steal. Freshman Nathan Hutchison (Riverton, Wyo.) and Maddox Shaver (freshman, Belleville Ontario) hit back-to-back doubles and sophomore Michael Quick (Oshawa, Ontario) tied the game 2-2 with a two-out single.

Clarendon took the lead with a five-run third inning. Freshman Cory Wouters (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) started the game on the mound for MCC and went two innings allowing five hits and six earned runs on five walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Ethan Badcock (Adelaide, Australia) pitched four innings, allowing five earned runs on four hits. He walked four and fanned five.

MCC scratched a run across in the fourth with a pair of walks and got a two-run home run by sophomore Jackson Yeager (Omaha), in the eighth).

Freshman Leif Friedrich (Surrey, British Columbia) pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out two.
