MCC golfers ninth at 2003 Nebraska Intercollegiate

AXTELL – The McCook Community College golf team finished ninth among 11 teams Saturday at the 2003 Nebraska Intercollegiate at Awarii Dunes Golf Club.

The tournament featured Nebraska teams from both two and four-year schools. MCC's two-day score of 674 was 71 shots back of first-place Bellevue University.                                                                      

"Golf is humbling and likes to kick you when you're down," said MCC Golf Coach Tyler Loop.

Southeast Community College was second, 10 shots back Bellevue. Midland University was third, Nebraska Wesleyan fourth and Doane University fifth.

Friday's top MCC scorer, Matt Grimonprez (Villenuave-d'ascq, France) had to withdraw from Saturday's round with a back injury.

Grimonprez's Friday round of 79 was the team's best on a day in which Loop said the weather made it tough -- resulting in a "worse-case scenario round" for all but Grimonprez.

Zachary Woods (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) was MCC's top finisher and was 19-over for the tournament with rounds of 84 and posted the team's best round of the two-day tournament with a 76 Saturday.

Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) and Chance Gambini (Las Vegas, Nev.) tied with scores of 170. Gambini had consecutive rounds of 85 while Brown shot an 88 Friday and an 82 Saturday. Everett Schroeder (Sheboygan, Wis.) had rounds of 95 and 92.

"We'll chalk this up as a learning experience and move on," said Loop.

Bellevue's Dylan Rodgers was the individual medalist shooting an even-par 144 for the tournament. His teammate Cayden Wynne, a 2023 MCC graduate, shot a 161.

MCC will return to the Region IX schedule and will be home to host the field Thursday and Friday at Heritage Hills Golf Course for the two-day tournament.
