MCC Golfers close out fall season at National Preview Tournament

HOBBS, N.M. – The McCook Community College golf team finished up the fall season Tuesday at the National Preview Tournament in Hobbs, N.M. After playing 36 holes Monday, players from the 17 teams played 18 holes Tuesday. MCC finished in a tie for 15th place.

"The first round was a little rocky with a 321 that put them in 17th place but they came back very nice in Round 2 with a 299," said MCC Coach Tyler Loop. "That put them in 16th and just four strokes out of 13th."

On Tuesday MCC shot a 311 to finish at +79 for the three-round tournament, in a tie with Garden City.

"These guys are the youngest team everywhere they go and there was a major learning curve at each course we played," said Loop. "And that led to some high first round scores this fall, but our second round was about 10 strokes better on average."

Freshman Everett Schroeder (Sheboygan, Wis.) posted MCC's best three-day score with a 220. He also had the team's best round shooting a second-round 69. Zachary Woods (freshman Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) had rounds of 80, 75 and 76 to finish at 231.

Freshman Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) had back-to-back rounds of 76 then ended the day Tuesday with an 81 and finished at 235. Chance Gambini (freshman, Las Vegas, Nev.) posted a 247 and freshman Matt Grimonprez (Villenuave-d'ascq, France) finished at 253.

"We need better consistency from top to bottom and that will be our main focus in the off season," said Loop.

The second half of the season starts March 21 at the Lamar Community College/Otero Junior College combined tournament in Colorado. The spring schedule includes the two-day MCC Invite March 28-29 at Heritage Hills Golf Course in McCook.
