Lady Rattlers shut out MCC softball 9-0 Saturday but MCC takes series 3-2

LA JUNTA, Colo. – The Otero Junior College softball team dealt McCook Community College a 9-0 decision Saturday to close out their five-game Region IX series. With a pair of wins Friday and a split Thursday, MCC was able to take the series 3-2.

On Saturday MCC was held to four singles after banging out 38 hits in two games Friday. "We couldn't get anything going offensively," said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall. "It was pretty much the opposite of how we were Friday."

Otero scored three times in the third inning, added five runs in the fourth and put the game away on the eight-run rule with a run in the fifth inning. (MCC was the home team in the scorebook, since this was a makeup game from the Region IX round-robin that was postponed in early March.)

MCC's hits came from freshman Katie Taylor (McCook), Kalyn Jackson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Ella Covill-Marter (Queensland, Australia) and sophomore Madisyn Simms (Maple Ridge, British Columbia).

Covill-Marter pitched 3.1 innings and allowed six hits, walked two and struck out five. Isabella Robertson (Las Alamos, N.M.) pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and walking one.

Otero goes to 12-18 overall and 11-7 in Region IX.

MCC falls to 8-20 on the season, 5-9 in Region IX.

MCC will be home for four games this week. On Monday the Hastings College JCs come to the Jaycees Sports Complex for a pair of games starting at 2 p.m. On Thursday, MCC will host Central Community College in Nebraska Community College Conference play with doubleheaders starting at 2 p.m.
