MCC’s Region IX Softball tournament game at Sterling, Colo. suspended because of weather

STERLING, Colo. – The Region IX playoff game between McCook Community College and Northeastern Junior College was suspended because of weather Friday.

MCC was leading 5-3 with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game will resume Saturday at 10 a.m. (MT) at the point of the Friday suspension.

Sophomore Nevaeh Ogden (Littleton Colo.) walked to lead off the game, sophomore Madisyn Simms (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) followed with a double, and freshman Andie Suhai (Medicine Hat, Alberta) singled home Ogden. Sophomore Hailee Ruble (Delta, Colo.) followed with a three-run home run to put MCC up 4-0.

Northeastern got one run back in the first and scored two in the third to cut the deficit to a run at 4-3.

In the fifth MCC got a run on a pair of out-out errors and an RBI-groundout by sophomore Emma Pennala (Kennewick, Wash.) to lead 5-3.

MCC pitcher Ella Covill-Marter (Queensland, Australia) has allowed four hits and three earned runs through 4.2 innings with five strikeouts. That's when lightning strikes halted the game.

The first two tournament games of the day were completed with Trinidad downing Otero 15-5 to eliminate the Lady Rattlers. Luna Community College won 10-9 over Western Nebraska to eliminate the Cougars.

In addition to the MCC/NJC game suspended, the consolation bracket game between Trinidad State and Luna was also shifted to Saturday.
