Four MCC softball players selected for Region IX Division 1 honors

Four McCook Community College softball players have been selected to the all-Region IX Division 1 team. Sophomore Madisyn Simms and freshmen Andie Suhai and Ella Covill-Marter were selected first team and Nevaeh Ogden received honorable mention.

Simms, a shortstop-catcher from Maple Ridge, British Columbia led the team with 87 hits on the season, batting .444 with seven home runs and 71 RBIs in 58 games. She had 22 doubles, four triples, 12 steals and slugged .704.

She recorded 28 multi-hit games including 11 games of three or more hits. Simms had consecutive four-hit games April 6-7 at La Junta against Otero. In the five-games series against the Lady Rattlers she went 13-for-19 with eight runs and eight RBIs. She had seven straight multi-hit games between March 28 and April 7. She recorded a six-RBI game at Lamar April 16 and had a five-RBI game at home March 24 against Luna when she went four-for-four with two doubles and a homer.

For her career spanning 118 games, Simms scored 110 runs, recorded 162 hits including 59 for extra bases and 116 RBIs. She leaves MCC with a .411 career batting average, .429 on-base mark and a .637 slugging average with 42 doubles, four triples and 13 home runs.

Covill-Marter, a pitcher-infielder from Queensland, Australia., led MCC with 12 wins from the pitching circle this season. She appeared in 34 games and started 28. In 174 innings, she struck out 235 hitters. That total ranked sixth best in the nation among pitchers in the 147 softball schools in Division 1. She had seven games of 10 or more strikeouts including five between April 22 and the end of the season May 6. Overall she had a 4.14 earned run average. Her 20 complete games were 11th best in the nation. Offensively, she batted .333 in 93 at bats scoring 25 runs, with 11 RBIs and six stolen bases.

Suhai, an infielder from Medicine Hat, Alberta, led MCC in hitting, slugging and extra-base hits. She batted .454 with a .520 on-base average, an .839 slugging mark and had 19 doubles, six triples, 12 home runs, and 13 stolen bases. She had 24 multi-hit games, nine games with three hits and a four-hit game April 29 at Scottsbluff against Western Nebraska. She had a season-best five RBI's in a 13-1 win over Luna Community College at home on March 23.

Ogden, an outfielder from Littleton Colo. batted .365 in 58 games, scored 64 runs, batted in 27 with 10 doubles and eight triples with 20 steals in 21 tries. She had a. 462 on-base percentage. She had 20 multi-hit games including a four-hit game April 7 at Otero in a 23-7 win. For her career she appeared in 121 games and had 151 hits in 402 at bats, a career .376 batting average, a .448 on-base percent, scoring 132 runs, 27 extra-base-hits and 58 steals in 62 attempts.
