MCC Softball sweeps Broncs 18-0, 17-5

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The McCook Community College softball team won a doubleheader over Garden City Friday. The Lady Indians won 18-0 and 17-5 in a pair of five-inning games.

"It was a good day for us today," said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall. "We played good defense, our pitchers competed in the zone, and we hit the ball well."

Freshman leadoff hitter Laila Gutierrez (Seminole, Texas) had four hits and drove in six runs in Game 1 and freshman Anna Elliott (Calgary, Alberta) hit her second grand slam in as many days as the Lady Indians lashed out 13 hits in five innings.

"I can't say I have seen that before with Anna. She was locked in at the plate," said Mendenhall.

An eight-run third inning broke open Game 2, with the offense ponding out 14 hits. Every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit, all but one scored at least one run and all but one drove in at least one run.

"I didn't think we would be this good offensively, but these girls had some great at bats," said Mendenhall.

The Broncbusters go to 0-8 on the season.

MCC, 2-2, will travel to Colby, Kan. Thursday for a pair of games starting at 1 p.m.

"We are a pretty good team when we put everything together," said Mendenhall.
