MCC Softball scores 45 runs in Saturday sweep

The McCook Community College softball team completed a four-game sweep over Northeast Community College with a 25-3, 20-5 doubleheader win at home Saturday.

"This was a much better day for us overall," said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall. "We limited the strikeouts and played great defense. 

MCC outhit NECC 32-11 on the day, committed just one error and batters struck out just twice in 61 at bats.

"We had much better at bats as well today.

MCC broke open a 9-0 lead in Game 1 with a 12-run third inning. In Game two MCC scored at least five runs in three of the five at bats and freshman Anna Elliott (Calgary, Alberta) hit her third grand-slam of the season and drove in five runs in a three-hit game.

"It was another day where everyone got some playing time," said Mendenhall. "It was nice to see the girls that aren't everyday players do an excellent job.

Northeast falls to 0-4 on the season.

MCC, 8-2, will travel to Goodland, Kan. Monday for a pair of games starting at 4 p.m. then travel to Western Oklahoma State College and Clarendon College of Texas Friday and Saturday. 

The Lady Indians return home March 4 for two games with Northwest Kansas Technical College starting at 2 p.m.

GAME 1 – McCook CC 25, Northeast CC 3: The Lady Indians scored three times in the first inning, six times in the second, 12 in the third and four runs in the fourth.

Freshman Rocio Mascorro (Brownsville, Texas) led the 17-hit MCC offense with a double, triple, a home run and six RBIs in her three-hit game. MCC also got three-hit games from freshmen Laila Gutierrez (Seminole, Texas) and Angela Banzet (Surrey, British Columbia).

Lexi Knapp (freshman, Berthoud, Colo.) pitched a shutout through four innings before the Hawks scored three runs in the fifth. She picked up the complete game win allowing six hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.

GAME 2 – McCook CC 20, Northeast CC 5: Anna Elliott's first-inning grand slam helped MCC to a 5-0 lead and the Lady Indians scored nine runs on seven hits in the second inning and added five runs on five hits in the fourth inning.

Anna Elliott and freshman Ayana Goodwin (Broomfield, Colo.) both had three hit games. Sophomore Ava Martinez (Houston, Texas) drove in four runs on two hits. MCC also got two-hit games from freshman Kendree Kern (LaSalle, Colo.) and Sadie Kahl (Calgary, Alberta).

Kahl picked up the win in the circle, allowing five hits and three runs over five innings. She walked two and struck out seven.
