MCC Women pick up five-point region win at Lamar
LAMAR, Colo. – The McCook Community College Women were able to ride the tide of a strong second quarter and held on to beat Lamar Community College Friday 51-46 in Region IX play.
"This was one of our worst offensive nights of the season and we were able to still pull out the win, so I am pleased with that," said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett.
MCC was down 14-7 after the first quarter but roared back with 23-18 edge in the second quarter to take a 30-25 lead at the half-time break. In the third quarter MCC scored just 10 points but were able to lead at the quarter break, 40-37.
Sophomore Vanessa Jurewicz (Stockholm, Sweden) poured in a game-high 16 points to lead all scorers. She made four of 10 3-pointers. Alyssa Van Vleet (sophomore, Oberlin, Kan.) had a pair of 3-ponters and finished with nine points.
Sophomore Sonia Sato (El Paso, Texas) led MCC with eight rebounds to go along with eight points and Maite Lara Garcia (sophomore, Sant Joan Despi, Spain) scored eight points and had four rebounds. She was four-for-four at the line.
Sophomore Shelby Clark (Las Vegas, Nevada) came off the bench to grab six boards, dish out four assists and had three points.
MCC shot just 30.8 percent from the field. Made six of 25 shots from the 3-point line (24.0 percent) and made 11 of 18 shots from the free-throw line (61.1 percent).
Lamar shot 28.8 percent from the floor, made four of 24 3-pointers (16.7 percent) and eight of 10 free throws.
MCC was out-rebounded 46-37 and turned the ball over 12 times to 15 for the Runnin' Lopes.
"We finished up our road region games 3-2 and have two home region games left," Pritchett said. "I like the position we are in right now. We have to have our best week of practice."
Lamar goes to 7-16, 2-5 in Region IX South games
MCC improves to 17-9 and 4-3 in the Region IX South
On Tuesday MCC travels to North Platte for a 5 p.m. game. MCC will close out the regular season with a pair of home games Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. against Trinidad State and Feb 19. At 2 p.m. against Otero Junior College. That game will also be in conjunction with the Dick Driml Chili Cook-Off and eight sophomores will be recognized prior to the game.
