Women’s basketball trio earns all-NCCAC honors

Three McCook Community College women's basketball players have been named to the all-Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference team.

Sophomores Sonia Sato, Vanessa Jurewicz and Alyssa Van Vleet, were all named to the team by a vote of NCCAC Coaches.

Sato (El Paso, Texas) started 29 games for MCC and averaged 9.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. She was a 39.2 percent shooter from the field and made 66.7 percent of her 87 free throws. She picked up 228 rebounds on the season, which led the team, including 53 on the offensive end to go along with 50 steals and six blocked shots.

Jurewicz (Stockholm, Sweden) started all 31 games for MCC and led the team in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game, 2.7 assists and 2.7 rebounds. For the season, she shot 36.9 percent from the field, made 55 of 174 shots from the 3-point line (31.6 percent), and sank 86 of 111 shots from the free-throw line (77.7 percent).

Van Vleet (Decatur Community High School, Oberlin, Kan.) played in 23 of MCC's 31 games and averaged 9.4 points, and 4.7 rebounds per game. She was 36 of 103 from the 3-point line (35 percent) and made 47 of 52 free throw attempts on the season (90.4 percent) – which was third best in the nation. Despite an injury early in the final NCCAC game at North Platte. Van Vleet averaged 10.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in the six Nebraska conference games.

MCC went 19-12 on the season and tied for the best record in the NCCAC with North Platte. Both teams went 5-1. North Platte Coach Jeff Thurman was named NCCAC Coach of The Year.
