MCC women close out semester with win over Redlands CC

LIBERAL, Kan. – The McCook Community College women closed out the semester Saturday with a 73-67 win over Redlands (Oklahoma) Community College in the Seward Community College Classic.

The two teams were tied at 11 at the end of the first quarter, then MCC outscored RCC 22-19 in the second period and 30-11 in the third.

"We started slow but I thought we executed offensively in the second and third quarters," said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. "We attacked offensively and got ourselves to the free-throw line and made our shots."

MCC went to the line 23 times and made 19 (82.6 percent). From the field MCC shot 39.7 percent and went eight-for-25 from the 3-point arc (32 percent).

MCC got 16 point-games from Vanessa Jurewicz (sophomore, Stockholm, Sweden) and redshirt freshman Taryn Lindsey, (Fountain, Colo.). Natalie Harmata, (freshman, Sydney, Australia) scored 14 points and freshman Marta Moya Perez (Alboraya, Spain) chipped in 13 points, on a three-for-five showing from the 3-point line and five-for-eight overall.

"Marta played well today and really shot the ball well for us," said Pritchett. "Vanessa and Taryn were both aggressive and played well off each other. I think we have a great 1-2 punch with those two."

Jurewicz was named to the all-tournament team.

MCC outrebounded Redlands 40-38 with Lindsey, Harmata and Perez all taking down five each.

Redlands shot 30.3 from the field, 25 percent from distance on 16 shots and 23 of 30 from the line (76.7 percent).

MCC had 18 turnovers to 19 for the Lady Cougars.

"This was a great win to finish the semester. I was really proud of them and how they competed the whole game," said Pritchett.

Redlands goes to 9-8 on the year.

MCC closes out the calendar year at 4-11.

The MCC women return to action Jan. 13 for the first of four home games in the first week back. MCC hosts Otero Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m., Trinidad State Jan. 14 at 2 p.m., Northeastern Junior College at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 19 and Western Nebraska at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 20.
