MCC women shut down Lamar for Region IX win at home

The McCook Community College women picked up a 51-39-win Friday over Lamar Community College in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. MCC improves to 4-2 in the Region IX South Division.

"This was a physical game, lots of turnovers for both teams, but we fought through," said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett.

The two teams combined for 55 turnovers. MCC held Lamar to eight points in the first period and six points in the third quarter. MCC got off to a 14-8 lead in the first quarter and led at the half 24-19. The home team outscored Lamar 16-6 in the third period.

"We didn't shoot the ball the greatest tonight, but we matched that with physicality and execution," said Pritchett.

MCC shot 36.5 percent from the field, made five of 16 3-pointers (31.3 percent), and went eight-for-12 from the free-throw line (66.7 percent).

"Lamar played that zone better than they did the first time against us and we did a good job executing overall," said Pritchett. "A lot of players stepped and played well a real team effort."

Sophomore Vanessa Jurewicz (Stockholm, Sweden) led MCC in scoring with 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Freshman Gemma Gruettner Bacoul (Berlin, Germany) scored 12 points and had five rebounds. Redshirt freshman Taryn Lindsey, (Fountain, Colo.) scored seven points and led MCC with seven rebounds.

"I'm excited for this team to continue to work, to continue to get better and really proud of them," said Pritchett.

The Lopes shot 28.6 percent from the field, made three of 12 from distance, and made all eight of their free throws.

MCC was outrebounded 36-26.

Lamar goes to 7-17 overall and 0-6 in the Region IX South standings.

MCC goes to 10-14 and 4-2 in the south.

MCC has two final home games left in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. On Tuesday MCC hosts North Platte at 5:30 p.m. in a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference game.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us losing to them up there, so we'll be eager to get back in the gym and get ready for them Tuesday," Pritchett said.

On Thursday MCC will host Region IX foe Northeastern Junior College at 5:30 p.m.
