Three MCC women hoopsters moving on to four-year programs

Three McCook Community College women's basketball players are moving on two four-year schools with two moving on to division I programs and another to a division 2 program.

Vanessa Jurewicz has signed on to division 1 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Valentina Monzo Diaz will play at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, a division 1 school, and Taryn Lindsey has committed to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, a division 2 program.

Jurewicz, a 5-7 guard from Stockholm, Sweden, was named to the all-Region IX South Sub-Region team as well as the all-Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference team. She averaged 15.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. She shot 40.2 percent from the field and 29.1 percent from the 3-point line and 72.8 percent from the free-throw line. She scored a season high 32 points Jan. 14 against Trinidad State and reached double figure scoring 24 times. For her career, she played in 62 games, averaged 14.8 points a game, 3.2 rebounds. 2.6 steals and 1.4 assists. Her two-year totals included 919 points, 196 rebounds, 161 assists and 87 steals. She shot 38.6 percent from the field, 30.5 percent from the 3-point line and 74.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Monzo, is a 6-2 forward from Santiago, Chili, who spent part of her three-year career at MCC on the injured list. After appearing in a Dec. 3, 2021 game, she had knee surgery and missed the rest of the 2021-2022 season and the first three months of this season. She returned to the court in early February and averaged 3.1 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. She scored a season-high eight points in the final game of the season. In the 2020-2021 season, she played in 23 games and averaged 3.9 points and 3.3 rebounds and played in the first six games of the 2021-2022 season, averaging 10.7 points and 3.7 rebounds before her season-ending knee injury. In her MCC career she played in 39 games, scored 185 points, grabbed 114 rebounds and dished out 36 assists. She shot 43.7 percent from the field, 40.9 percent from the 3-point line and 76.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Lindsey, a 5-5 guard from Fountain, Colo., averaged 12.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. She made 147 out of 173 shots from the line this year. That 85 percent was 11th best in the country. She was named to the all-Region IX South Sub-Region team and the all-Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference team. In 30 games, she scored in double figures 17 times with a season high 31on Jan. 31 against Trinidad State. She hit 35.5 percent of her shots from the field, and 22.6 percent from the 3-point line. She finished the year scoring 363 points and grabbing 138 rebounds.

Over the past two seasons under Coach Brandon Pritchett, the program has had six players move on to division 1 schools and three more with division two schools.
