Western Wyoming tops MCC women 70-38

RIVERTON, Wyo. – Western Wyoming blitzed the McCook Community College women Saturday 25-2 in the first quarter and went on to a 70-38 win in the Rustler/Mustang Classic.

The Lady Mustangs ran up a 46-11 halftime lead on the way to their seventh win of the season.

MCC shot just 23.3 percent from the floor on 60 shots, 16 percent from the 3-point line on 25 attempts and 50 percent from the free-throw line on 12 shots.

Western Wyoming shot 46.6 percent from the field, made 12 of 23 shots from distance (52.2 percent) and made four of nine free throws (44.4 percent) while winning the rebound battle 39-34.

The Lady Indians did outscore WWCC 21-12 in the third period.

Sophomore Madara Liepniece (Riga, Latvia) led MCC with 11 points and seven rebounds, and Irene Fernandez Pavesio (sophomore, Asturias, Spain) added nine points and 11 rebounds.

Western Wyoming goes to 7-4 on the season.

MCC wraps up the first half of the season at 9-5 and will face the Lady Mustangs again Jan. 9 in the Region 9 Crossover Classic at Wyo. one of three games in three days. The Lady Indians also play Casper College and Gillette.

The Region IX South schedule starts Jan. 17 and 18 when MCC travels to Colorado to play Otero College and Trinidad State.

The next homestand for the Lady Indians begins Jan. 21 when they host Lamar followed by a Sunday home games Jan. 26 against Southeast Community College and Jan. 28 against Western Nebraska.
