MCC Volleyball drops pair of matches at Norfolk

NORFOLK – The McCook Community College volleyball team lost twice Friday in the Northeast Community College tournament. MCC dropped the opening match to Twelfth-ranked Barton County Community College 3-1 and lost 3-2 to Garden City Community College.

Against Barton County, MCC lost 16-25, 25-21, 8-25 and 10-25. The 25-21 MCC win in the second set was the first time the Cougars lost a set all season; BCCC then won the next two sets, improving to 6-0.

"We can only get better," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

In the match with Garden City Community College, MCC took the first two sets 27-25, 25-17, then lost the final three by the scores of 23-25, 17-25, 12-15. The Broncbusters improve to 3-5 on the year.

MCC goes to 1-4 and will be back in action for two matches Saturday starting at 1 p.m. against Fort Scott Community College and at 5 p.m. against the host school, Northeast Community College.

Barton County CC 3, McCook CC 1: Mia Pena, sophomore, Greeley, Colo., had seven kills and three assist blocks. Sophomore Jordan Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) had seven kills and one assist block.

Janie Sommer, (sophomore, Maxwell) had five kills and one assist block. Freshman Jaycee Widener (Wellfleet) was credited with five kills and two assist blocks.

Makayla Brown, (freshman, Colorado Springs) had two kills, four assist blocks and one solo block. Thaynara Isabela, (freshman, São Paulo, Brazil) had three kills, one assist block and one solo block. Amerika Jones, (sophomore, Honolulu, Hawaii) had one kill and one assist block.

Garden City CC 3 McCook CC 2: Jordan Jerome led MCC with 16 kills, two digs, four assist blocks, one solo block and two aces. Makayla Brown had 15 kills, and seven assist blocks.

Jaycee Widener had 11 kills, one assist block and an ace. Thaynara Isabela was credited with seven kills, four digs, two assist blocks and one ace. Mia Pena had five kills and two assist blocks.

Adeline McIntire, (freshman, Paola, Kan.) had 34 assists, one assist block and one ace. Kaylee Palmieri, (sophomore, Gibbon, Neb.) had 10 digs and one ace.
