MCC Volleyball sweeps Saturday matches at Norfolk

NORFOLK – The McCook Community College volleyball team responded Saturday from a pair of Friday losses to salvage a weekend split at the Northeast Community College Tournament. MCC swept Saturday matches over Mount Marty JV and over Northeast.

MCC prevailed over Mount Marty 25-22, 25-17, 25-13 and topped Northeast 25-21, 25-20, 25-20.

"We knew going into today that we needed to work on the small things and only move forward," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "I ended up making a few line-up changes that helped out our rhythm too."

In the weekend finale against the hosts, sophomore Jordan Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) had a career-high 19 kills.

MCC improves to 3-4 and will open the home season at 6 p.m. Thursday against Southeast Community College to start the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference Schedule.

On Friday MCC will host the Mid-Plains Community College Tournament at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center, opening play with an 11 a.m. game against Laramie County Community College and a 5 p.m. match with Independence Community College. Saturday action starts at 11 a.m. against Iowa Western Community College and the tournament wraps up Saturday with a 4 p.m. match against Garden City Community College.

McCOOK CC 3, Mount Marty JV 0: MCC began play Saturday with a straight-set win over the Mount Marty junior varsity. Jordan Jerome led the MCC attack with 11 kills and two assist blocks. Freshman Thaynara Isabela, (freshman, São Paulo, Brazil) had eight kills to go along with three assist blocks and three aces.

Victoria Thomas, (freshman, Houston, Texas) tallied five kills and one assist block. Sophomore transfer Mia Pena (Greeley, Colo.,) had five kills and four assist blocks.

Janie Sommer (sophomore, Maxwell) had 30 assists, four kills, two assist blocks and two aces. Freshman Jaycee Widener (Maywood-Hayes Center) had two kills and one assist block.

Makayla Brown (freshman, Colorado Springs) was credited with five assist blocks, one solo and one kill. Sophomore Kaylee Palmieri (Gibbon) had two ace serves.

McCOOK CC 3, NORTHEAST CC 0: Jordan Jerome concluded her Saturday with 30 kills with the final 19 coming against the Hawks. She also had three assist blocks Thaynara Isabela had 11 kills and two assist blocks.

Victoria Thomas had eight kills, one assist block and two aces. Mia Pena had six kills and three assist blocks.

Janie Sommer led the passing attack with 36 assists to go along with three kills.

Makayla Brown had three kills, three assist blocks and two aces.
