MCC Volleyball sweeps SECC in home-opener

The McCook Community College volleyball team opened the home season in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center Thursday with a straight-set win over Southeast Community College, 25-16, 25-16, 25-20.

"I think tonight was a good match to start our weekend tournament ahead of us," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "We have a lot of things we need to fix, on the mental side and we need to get more consistent."

Jordan Jerome, sophomore, (Rawlins, Wyo.,) led the MCC attack with 13 kills. Freshman Thaynara Isabela, (São Paulo, Brazil) had seen kills and one ace serve.

Victoria Thomas (freshman, Houston, Texas) had six kills, one assist block and an ace. Makayla Brown (freshman, Colorado Springs) had five kills and assisted on one block. Mia Pena (sophomore transfer, Greeley, Colo.) had four kills and two assist blocks.

"I did think we served tough today but we have a lot of things we can improved on," Kobza. "We haven't reached our peak yet."

Sophomore Janie Sommer (Maxwell) led the serving attack with five aces to go along with 30 assists, two kills and an assist block. Sophomore Kaylee Palmieri (Gibbon, Neb.) had three ace serves.

MCC improves to 4-4 on the season and will be right back on the court Friday and Saturday in the MCC Invitational. MCC opens play at 1 p.m. Friday against Midland College (Texas) and wrap up with a 7 p.m. game against Independence Community College. On Saturday MCC will open with a 9 a.m. match against Hutchinson Community College and play the final game of the tournament at 3 p.m. against Garden City Community College.
