MCC Volleyball splits Friday matches at home tourney

The McCook Community College volleyball team split a pair a matches to open the-two day Mid-Plains Community College tournament Friday. MCC dropped the first match of the day to Midland College of Texas in five sets then downed Independence Community College in straight sets.

 "Today was an okay day," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "We still have lots of room for improvement; we're still just trying to figure everybody out. I did think our second match, we cleaned up our errors quite a bit over the first match."

Midland downed MCC 25-17, 21-25, 21-25 25-17, 15-11. MCC came back for the sweep over Independence 25-13, 2508, 25-13.

"We played Midland well, we didn't play them great. Midland's a really decent team," Kobza said. "We just need to come out and correct the small things."

MCC goes to 5-5 on the season with two more matches Saturday in the tournament starting at 9 a.m. against Hutchinson Community College and then at 3 p.m. against Garden City Community College.

Midland (Texas) 3, MCC 2: The Chaparrals won the opening set 25-17, MCC came back to claim the second and third sets 25-21, 25-21 and Midland claimed the final two sets 25-17, 15-11.  

Freshman Thaynara Isabela (São Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore Amerika Jones (Honolulu, Hawaii) paced the MCC charge at the net with 10 kills apiece. Isabela added two ace serves, Jones also had an assist block.

Jordan Jerome (sophomore, Rawlins, Wyo.) had nine kills, five aces and one assist block. Makayla Brown, (freshman, Colorado Springs) had four kills, one ace and one assist block. Victoria Thomas (freshman, Houston, Texas) had four kills and one ace serve.

Janie Sommer (sophomore, Maxwell) had 29 assists and one ace serve.

MCC 3, Independence CC 0: Jordan Jerome had seven kills in the nightcap along with three aces. Jaycee Widener (freshman, Wellfleet) had five kills.

Three players had four kills each: Thaynara Isabela, Makayla Brown, and freshman Jisell Chumacero, (Eaton, Colo.). Isabela had one assist block, Brown had three to go along with one solo block. Victoria Thomas, had two kills and one ace.

Janie Sommer led the passing with 21 assists and one assist block.

Amanda Pizzol, (freshman, São Paulo, Brazil) had two ace serves.
