MCC Volleyball wins twice in WyoBraska tournament

TORRINGTON, Wyo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team opened the WyoBraska Invitational tournament here Friday winning both its matches, over Western Wyoming in five sets and Eastern Wyoming in four sets.

"We stayed confident in ourselves the whole day and we didn't get comfortable," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "It's when we get comfortable is when we lose our confidence."

MCC improves to 10-5 on the season. The win over Eastern Wyoming was the team's sixth win in a row.

"I think Janie Sommer is doing a great job at leading her team and being a solid and sound setter," Kobza said of the sophomore from Maxwell.

Sommer distributed 37 assists in the opening match against Western Wyoming and 28 more in the win over Eastern Wyoming.

On Saturday, the tournament continues as MCC will travel to Scottsbluff taking on Lake Region State College (N.D.) at 10 a.m. and Casper College at 5:30 p.m.

McCook CC 3, Western Wyoming 2: The two teams traded set wins with MCC winning the first set 25-22, the Mustangs came back to take the second set 25-14, MCC won the third set 26-24, WWCC took the fourth set 25-16 and MCC claimed the fifth set 15-13.

Freshman Jaycee Widener, Wellfleet, led MCC on the attack with 12 kills and one ace. Thaynara Isabela, (freshman, São Paulo, Brazil) had 11 kills, two aces and one assist block.

Jisell Chumacero, (freshman, Eaton, Colo.), had 10 kills and two assist blocks. Victoria Thomas (freshman, Houston, Texas) came away with nine kills.

Four MCC players were credited with four kills each: freshman Makayla Brown (Colorado Springs), Amerika Jones (sophomore, Honolulu, Hawaii), Mia Pena (sophomore, Greeley, Colo.), and Janie Sommer, who led MCC with 37 set assists.

Jordan Jerome, sophomore, Rawlins, Wyo., had two aces and one solo block

Western Wyoming fell to 1-11 on the season with the loss.

McCook CC 3, Eastern Wyoming 1: MCC's win came 25-22, 25-23, 11-25, 25-22.

Jordan Jerome led the MCC attack with 12 kills, three assist blocks and solo block.

Makayla Brown had six kills two aces and one assist block. Thaynara Isabela also had six kills with one ace. Amerika Jones was credited with five kills and an assist block. Mia Pena had three kills and three assist blocks.

In addition to leading MCC with 28 assists in the match, Janie Sommer also had two kills, two assist blocks and one solo block.

Sophomore Kaylee Palmieri (sophomore, Gibbon) had 10 digs and an ace in the match.

Eastern Wyoming came into the match 4-4 having opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over Barton Community College.
