MCC Volleyball finishes 3-1 at WyoBraska tournament

SCOTTSBLUFF – The McCook Community College volleyball team dropped its final match of the WyoBraska Tournament here Saturday to finish at 3-1 for the weekend. MCC downed Lake Region State College 3-0 in the opening match Saturday and lost the finale to Casper College 3-1. On Friday, MCC downed Western Wyoming in five sets and Eastern Wyoming in four sets.

"It is not how we wanted to finish our weekend, but we are still learning more about our team when we lose," said MCC coach Hayley Kobza.

The loss snapped a seven match winning streak for MCC, whose record goes to 11-6 on the season.

 "We have a good week of matches coming up, so we need to hit the ground running and clean a few things up at practice," Kobza said.

On Wednesday the team travels to Kearney to take on the University of Nebraska JVs at 7 p.m., then return home for three weekend games.

On Friday MCC hosts Trinidad State at 7 p.m. in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. On Saturday MCC will play Otero Junior College at 1 p.m., followed at 5 p.m. with a match against Northeast Community College (Norfolk).

McCook CC 3 Lake Region State (N.D.) 0: MCC began the day Saturday sweeping past the Royals 25-14, 25-18, and 25-20.

Sophomore Jordan Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.,) led MCC with 11 kills to go along with four assists, two assist blocks two solo blocks and three aces. Victoria Thomas (freshman, Houston, Texas) had seven kills and one ace. Freshman Thaynara Isabela (São Paulo, Brazil) had five kills, one assist block and one ace serve.

Three MCC players were credited with four kills and one assist block each: Amerika Jones (sophomore, Honolulu, Hawaii), Mia Pena, (sophomore transfer, Greeley, Colo.) and freshman Jaycee Widener, (Maywood-Hayes Center.

Sophomore setter Janie Sommer (Maxwell) had 29 assists, two kills, two assist blocks and two aces.

Casper College 3, McCook CC 1: The T-Birds prevailed 25-14, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18.

Thaynara Isabela and Mia Pena both paced the MCC attack with eight kills each. Jordan Jerome had five kills and three assist blocks, Jaycee Widener had five kills and one assist block, Amerika Jones and Victoria Thomas both had five kills. Makayla Brown (freshman, Colorado Springs) had two kills.

Janie Sommer had 30 assists, two kills, two assist blocks and two aces. Sophomore Kaylee Palmieri (Gibbon) had eight digs and one ace.

Freshman Amanda Pizzol (São Paulo, Brazil) and freshman McKenna Crews (Loveland, Colo.) both had two service aces.
