MCC volleyball drops straight-set match to NJC

STERLING, Colo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team lost a three-set Region IX match Tuesday on the road at Northeastern Junior College. MCC lost 19-25, 17-25, and 25-27.

"Losing is never an outcome you want, and we need to play like that isn't what we want," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "We let NJC score on us every time on the right side and in the middle and never made the adjustments to stop the ball."

Sophomore Jordan Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) led MCC with 13 kills, to go along with two assist blocks and an ace. Mia Pena, (sophomore, Greeley, Colo.) had seven kills and four assist blocks.

Freshman Thaynara Isabela (São Paulo, Brazil) was credited with five kills two assist blocks and an ace. Makayla Brown (freshman, Colorado Springs) had three kills and two assist blocks. Victoria Thomas (freshman, Houston, Texas) had three kills and Amerika Jones (sophomore, Honolulu, Hawaii) had two kills.

Sophomore Janie Sommer (Maxwell) led MCC with 27 assists and had four kills with one assist block.

Northeastern JC improves to 10-10 and 2-0 in Region IX play (sweeping Lamar Sept. 23). MCC falls to 13-0 and 1-2 in the region.

The trip to Sterling was the first of eight straight road matches for MCC until returning home Oct. 20 to take on NJC.

 "We have a long trek of travel ahead the next few weeks and we need to get our road warrior minds better," Kobza said.

Next on the slate is a Thursday Region IX match at Lamar Colo. It's back to Nebraska Community College Conference play next week with road games at Beatrice Oct. 5 against Southeast Community College and Oct. 6 in Columbus against Central Community College.
