MCC Volleyball comes back for five-set win at Lamar

LAMAR, Colo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team came back from two sets down Thursday to take down Region IX foe Lamar Community College in five sets. After losing both the first two sets 21-25, MCC rebounded with set wins of 25-11, 25-13, and 15-11.

"We have to work on finding momentum from the beginning and continue to build on it," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza, "Instead we are doing it all in reverse order."

Sophomore Jordan Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) paced the MCC attack at the net with 16 kills. Sophomore Mia Pena (Greeley, Colo.) had nine kills and two aces.

Three MCC players finished the night with seven kills each including: Freshman Thaynara Isabela (São Paulo, Brazil) also with two assist blocks and two aces; Victoria Thomas (freshman, Houston, Texas) who added three assist blocks and one solo to her seven kills; and Jaycee Widener (freshman, Wellfleet) who assisted on one block with her seven kills.

Freshman Jisell Chumacero (freshman, Eaton, Colo.) had five kills and four assist blocks. Makayla Brown (freshman, Colorado Springs) had one kill and one assist block.

 "We have a solid team, but we individually need to work on being good to become a great team," Kobza said. "I do have to give a shout out to Suzy Cordova, she's killing it every match being a great student assistant."

Sophomore Janie Sommer (Maxwell) had 47 assists, five kills and one solo block. Sophomore Kaylee Palmieri (Gibbon) snagged two aces from the serving line.

MCC goes to 14-9 and 2-2 in Region IX. The Running Lopes go to 3-18, 0-1.

MCC has the weekend off and returns to the court for four matches next week starting with a pair of road matches in Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference Action. On Tuesday MCC (2-0 in NCCAC play) travels to Beatrice for a 6 p.m. match with Southeast Community College and on Wednesday MCC is at Columbus to play Central Community College.

On Friday, Oct. 8, MCC travels to Scottsbluff for a pair of matches with nationally ranked teams. At 4 p.m. MCC faces No. 2 Iowa Western Community College (14-1) followed at 6 p.m. against No. 14 Western Nebraska Community College (15-8).
