MCC volleyball takes NCCAC match over Southeast CC

BEATRICE – The McCook Community College volleyball team downed Southeast Community College Tuesday night to nudge a step closer to the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference Championship. After dropping the first set 19-25, MCC came back to win 27-25, 25-8, 25-17.

"We found what we needed to do in the third set and we have got to find out how to do that in the first two sets," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

Sophomore Jordan Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) paced the MCC attack with 17 kills to go along with five digs. Freshman Jaycee Widener, (Maywood-Hayes Center) was second with 12 kills.

"Jordan and Jaycee played a solid last two sets on the pins and I hope they carry that over to tomorrow," said Kobza.

Amerika Jones, sophomore (Honolulu, Hawaii) was credited with eight kills and three assist blocks. Sophomore transfer Mia Pena (Greeley, Colo.) had seven kills and two assist blocks. Jisell Chumacero (freshman, Eaton, Colo.) had three kills, one assist block and one ace. Freshman Makayla Brown (Colorado Springs) added one kill.

Sophomore Janie Sommer (Maxwell), who has the seventh most set assists in the nation coming into Tuesday's play, added 38 more assists to bring her season total to 810. She also added two aces and a kill. Adeline McIntire (freshman, Paola, Kan.) had four assists in the match.

Sophomore Kaylee Palmieri (Gibbon) had 14 digs and two aces. Amanda Pizzol (freshman, São Paulo, Brazil) was credited with five digs.

McKenna Crews (freshman, Loveland, Colo.) had three ace serves.

MCC improves to 15-9 and 3-0 in the NCCAC and will wrap up the road portion of the NCCAC schedule Wednesday in Columbus. The Raiders (9-14, 2-1) swept North Platte (11-9, 2-2) 3-0 Tuesday to move into second place, one game back of MCC in the standings.

Southeast CC falls to 7-19 and 0-4 in the NCCAC.

On Friday MCC travels to Scottsbluff for a triangular against two top Top 20 teams starting with a 4 p.m. match with the host Cougars, ranked 16th in the latest NJCAA Top 20 poll (16-9) followed at 6 p.m. against second ranked Iowa Western Community College (18-1).
